First North East Contact Lens Education Program 2023 was conducted on 24th & 25th March at Art & Culture Auditorium, Berawtlang.Day 1- 24th March 2023Dr. Ch. Sarakham Aimol, Optometrist, Dept. of Optometry, RIPANS hosted the program on the first day of the conference. Optometry HOD, Dr. Renee Lalrinzuali addressed and welcomed everyone to the program and the Chief Guest, Dr. Sanjay Dinkar Sawant, Director, RIPANS inaugurated the function and encouraged everyone regarding the importance of continuing education especially in the field of health. The new Director graced the occasion just one day after joining RIPANS and the Department is very grateful as his august presence enriched the program and enhanced its value.It was an honour to the have the presence of Dr. Subodh Kumar Dixit, President, Indian Optometric Association. In his speech he talked about the first Optometry college in1958 and compared the past and the present scenario of optometry. He also advised the students and practicing Optometrists to be proud of being an Optometrist which is a fast progressing Health Care Profession. He also stressed on the importance of being registered to IOA forum.Mr. Khem Raj Nackwal from Bausch & Lomb, was the first speaker of the scientific session. He walked us through the introduction of contact lens. He made it so fun and easy to grasp and what was learnt will not be forgotten easily. He has in detail talked about the Oxygen permeability, classifications, indications and contraindications, wettability of contact lens materials, and the basic parameters of contact lens.In his second talk titled Contact Lens Care and Maintenance, he has made sure all the contact lens users and the contact lens practitioners should always be happy and never be in doubt about the care and maintenance of contact lenses. He also stressed on the importance of the synonym CRADLE for successful contact lens wear. The different components of the lens solution of CAPSCOP, efficacy of lens solution, use of preventive drops, importance and cleanliness of maintaining the lens cases and he ended his talk with the importance of education the contact lens users.The second speaker of the day, Mr. Nilesh Thite, also from Bausch & Lomb, enlightened us about the Soft contact lens fitting of Spherical and Toric. First, he talked about patient screening, preliminary examinations, parameters selection, final power determination and fitting assessment and to know what is a perfect fit and the modifications that can be done if needed of soft contact lens for both the spherical and toric lenses. He has explained and made learning very simple and very interesting.In his second talk, Multifocal Contact Lens fitting, he explained what is presbyopia and its symptoms, who are the ideal patients for multifocal contact lens, the contact lens designs for presbyopes, etc., He stressed on the importance of the patient’s needs, the patient’s expectations and how to handle a patient by explaining the benefits of using the multifocal contact lens, the adjustments required from the patients and the benefits once the patient conquer adjustment period. Evaluation of the multifocal contact lens fit and ended his talk with some useful tips for the presbyopic contact lens users. He always knows how to draw the audiences’ attention and never let anyone feel bored.Dr. Sairengliana Sailo, Ophthalmologist from Mizoram, once again reminded us that every good thing also has its own complications. In his talk, Contact lens related ocular complications first he took us through the anatomy and physiology of the cornea. And in detail he spoke about the contact lens related ocular problems, how to identify and how to manage them, and explained their causes. He ended his talk with the importance of knowing the anatomy and physiology of the cornea for proper and successful management.In the 6th session, Dr. Rajeev Prasad, Vice President Asia Pacific Council of Optometry and Secretary, IOA, in his talk on Ortho K lens in myopia control started with the statistics and prevalence of myopia, the management mechanisms/the various treatment options available. He continued with the introduction to Orthokeratology, the science, the generations, the principles, the parameters, fitting process and patterns, patient selections, disadvantages and advantages and patient care of Ortho K lenses and the similarities of Ortho K and Lasik. And brought to light why Ortho K is the new solution for myopia management and ended his session with a very informative and interactive discussion. Again Mr. Nilesh Thite and Mr. Khem Raj Nackwal along with Mr. Suraj Kumar Chaurasiya of CL Gupta Eye Institute, Moradabad, led us into a wonderful session of one of the best live demonstration and case discussion of soft contact lens.The scientific Session ended with a wonderful pleasant surprise from the Bausch and Lomb Team in collaboration of the 3rd Year students of RIPANS in which the students enacted real life scenarios of patients requiring contact lenses and their interaction with Optometrists which highlighted the various aspects of the requirements, patient-Optometrist interactions and advise for the best option available.Ms. Katia Kayina, Optometrist, Dept. of Optometry, RIPANS, summarized the days scientific sessions highlighting important points in each of the presentations.Dr. R. Lalduhawmi, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Optometry, RIPANS, chaired the Cultural Program and everyone had a wonderful time and it was followed by dinner. It was interesting and exciting as the students participated with enthusiasm and chocolates were given as reward for the right answers. Dr Laura also explained with each question the reason for the correct answer and hence it was very beneficial for the participating students and delegates.The day was dedicated to speciality lenses. Mr. Suraj Kumar Chaurasiya talked about the RGP Lens fitting in keratoconus followed by Special contact lens fitting. He detailed out about the fitting assessments, three point touch, and the required parameter adjustments for steep fit, flat fit. In both his talk he elaborated all the various points clearly and it was very informative and practical. Ms. Nending Pampi, Consultant Optometrist, Theia Optometry Eye Care & Optical, Arunachal Pradesh, gave a detailed talked on the Therapeutic contact lens. The different types, the difference between prosthetic and bandage contact lenses, the usage and the follow up care. Mr. Kishor Choudhury, Associate Professor, Sri Sankardeva Nethralaya, Guwahati, gave a talk on Refraction in contact lens fitting and took us through the basics of refraction reminding us of the primary steps that have to be taken. Dr. Mantu Akon, Associate Professor & Consultant Optometrist, Visiting Professor at Desh Bhagat University & CT University, with Mr. Suraj Kumar Chaurasiya did live demonstration with hands on workshop for Rose K lens fitting and evaluation of the fit.In the last scientific session, Introduction to Research by Dr. Mantu Akon, he talked about the importance of research for the society and how to go about it for a student doing his research. He presented all the various steps and requirements in preparing for and completion of any research.Oral Paper presentation titled The visual field status of myopic eye was given by Md. Minhazul, 6th Semester student of B. Optometry, RIPANS. This same paper won the first prize in the 12th National Optometry Conference held on 29th-30th October 2022 at New Delhi. Lots of important inputs were given by the Expert Resource Persons on how to improve the study in future.The program ended with Vote of thanks from the Convener, Mr. Firdoos Jaman, Optometrist, Dept. of Optometry RIPANS.All the faculty, staff and students of Dept. of Optometry worked very hard for the successful conduct of this program. In spite of the small number of staff, all the sessions and events were conducted smoothly and time management was also commendable.
