Regional Institute of Paramedical & Nursing Sciences (RIPANS), Aizawl was established in 1995-1996 under North Eastern Council (NEC). It was transferred to Ministry of Health & Family Welfare w.e.f. 1st April, 2007. The Institute offers career oriented courses in the field of Paramedical, Pharmacy and Nursing Sciences under one roof.
I will take the privilege to mention in brief about the genesis and over all status of the Institute. Realizing the need for the development of Paramedical man-power and allied profession in the country, especially in the North Eastern Region, the North Eastern Council (NEC) conceived the idea of establishing Paramedical and Allied Institute in one of the North Eastern States. The Government of India conveyed its approval to establish Paramedical & Nursing Institute at Aizawl, Mizoram and conveyed through the Ministry of H & FW, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Home Affairs in 1995.
In 1996 the Institute started functioning as Regional Paramedical & Nursing Training Institute (RP&NTI) with absolutely no infrastructure of its own. Four storeyed building near Civil Hospital Aizawl was rented where all Academic activities were conducted. Overall administration was carried out from another rented building at Chanmari with a handful of staff. Boys and Girls students were also accommodated in different private buildings within the city. In spite of the circumstances faced above, the Institute conducted the following courses from the academic year 1996.
1) B.Sc (Nursing)
2) Diploma in Laboratory Technology (D-MLT)
3) Certificate Course in Laboratory Technology (C-MLT)
4) Diploma in X-Ray Technology
5) Diploma in Pharmacy
6) Diploma in Electro Cardiography (ECG)
7) Diploma in Ophthalmic Technology (OT)
8) Multipurpose Health Worker Course.
The above courses were run by few qualified teaching faculty and supporting staff initially. RIPANS shall ever remain grateful to the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Mizoram for having rendered necessary help and services in all possible ways including man power and infrastructure. Govt. of Mizoram (H & FW Dept.) also provided their prime land in Zemabawk (near Cancer Hospital) which is 39.60 Bighas. The Institute Complex at this site is now fully occupied with the main buildings as mentioned below:-
1) Administrative Block
2) Boys’ Hostel and Girls Hostel (160 +110 Capacity each)
3) Academic Building – I
4) Academic Building – II
5) Staff Quarters (Type I to IV of 6 units each)
6) Director’s Quarter.
In the meantime, the overall control and management of the Institute with all its assets and liabilities has also been transferred from NEC to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare from 1st April, 2007. There have also been gradual changes in trends and degree courses in Paramedical studies are coming up elsewhere in the country. As a consequence the present courses had all been consolidated to technical degree courses. Hence today, we have the following 5 degree courses and one Post Graduate course all affiliated to Mizoram University.
1) B.Sc Nursing
2) Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology
3) Bachelor in Radiography & Imaging Technology
4) Bachelor in Optometry & Ophthalmic Techniques
5) Bachelor of Pharmacy
6) Master in Pharmacy
Since the inception of the Institute in 1996 a total of 2344 students from various courses have successfully completed their courses. They are now working in various parts of the country and also abroad. RIPANS has become well known by now though the quality of work and discipline that RIPANS ‘products’ maintained wherever they work.
RIPANS is undergoing rapid transformation and I can see that the Institute is gradually shaping up to become the prime example in the field of Medical, Pharmacy and Nursing Education.
I am inspired by the hard work of the staff, faculty and students and the peace and harmony that the campus is maintaining in spite of the fact that we belong to different cultures, background and religion. Hence, the progress made by the Institution is the culmination of the above and the concerted efforts made by the students, faculty and staff.
The continuing support and guidance received from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has always been great and together we shall make this Institute a Centre of Excellence.
The immediate future plan of the Institute include –
– Creation of new posts
– Infrastructure development
– Establishment of 100 bedded Hospital.
The main pride of RIPANS has always been and will always be our students from various parts of the country. Hence, the main focus of the Institute shall always be the welfare and imparting quality education of the students.
